The Diocese of Houma–Thibodaux (Latin: Dioecesis Humensis–Thibodensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in southeastern Louisiana. It covers Terrebonne , Lafourche , and the eastern part of St. Mary parishes, Morgan City , and Grand Isle in Jefferson Parish . [ 1 ]
St. Francis de Sales Parish was founded around 1847 by the Rev. Zéphyrin Lévêque. Mass was initially celebrated in the Terrebonne Parish courthouse. [1] The first church building was completed in 1848 and construction on the present church was begun in 1936 under the direction of the Rev. August Vandebilt.
From 1969 to 1971, Latino was assigned to St. Philip the Apostle Parish in the Desire Project in New Orleans. He served as pastor of St. Bernadette Parish in Houma, Louisiana (1972–1987), at which time he was appointed rector of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. In 1977, Latino was incardinated, or transferred to the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.

On March 2, 1977 Pope Paul VI established the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. [5] St. Francis de Sales Church in Houma became the cathedral of the new diocese and St. Joseph Church in Thibodaux became the co-cathedral. St. Joseph Life Center was built in 1985 to house the parish's administrative offices and community center.
