Jules breaks into the Salvatore mansion in wolf form and attacks Damon, but Rose pushes him out of the way, getting bitten on the shoulder instead (werewolf bites are lethal to vampires). As Rose succumbs to the effects of the bite, Damon stakes her in a glorious dream they share, giving her a peaceful death.
Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is free and out of the tomb now that Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is dead and she moves into the Salvatore house where she stays with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley). She tells them that she did not leave town because she wants to help them kill Klaus, something that the two brothers do not seem to believe.
Stefan realizes that John gave the dagger to Damon to use it because he wants to kill Damon as well and immediately tries to call Damon and warn him about it. At the same time in the Salvatore house, Damon is getting ready to kill Elijah when Alaric interrupts him since he got a phone call from Stefan who told him about the dagger.
The scene is a nod to the cemetery scene in the show's pilot episode of season 1 when Damon can control fog and crows. They are also revealed to be married, growing old, and finding peace together. As Elena reunites with her family in the Gilbert house, Damon reunites with Stefan in the Salvatore Boarding House with the words, "Hello, brother."
Stefan approaches Mason to apologize on Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) behalf for trying to kill him and to offer a truce, but Mason declines. Stefan insists and "threatens" Mason, who finally shakes hands with Stefan. Damon rejoins Stefan to ask what he was doing with Mason and says that despite the truce, Damon still wants to kill him.
"The Descent" received positive reviews. Eric Goldman of IGN rated the episode with 9.5/10 saying that it was one of his favorite episodes of the series yet. Goldman praised Lauren Cohan's acting and also commented on the human side of Damon we've seen on this episode.
Elena eventually gets to the Salvatore house and she meets, for the first time, Katherine, who had managed to unchain herself and hearing Elena, staked Stefan in the leg. Meanwhile, Damon follows Mason after the barbeque and stabs him with a silver knife. It is revealed that silver doesn't affect the werewolves and that it was just a myth.
