By 2011, when inequality began to fall in China, global societal poverty moved away from East Asia to South Asia. By 2019, 27 percent of the global poor lived in South Asia and 24 percent of the global poor lived in Sub-Saharan Africa. Most countries in these two regions have been experiencing high or rising inequality.
