Winchester discontinued the 100 for purely economic reasons. The gun was considerly more expensive to produce than Remington's 740/742 and they were getting hammered on price point. A lot of a barrel's accuracy is attributed to its 'harmonics,' or how the barrel flexes during firing.

We all know that 100's are subject to a recall. The recall involves the firing pin breaking within the bolt causing the pin to protrude from the bolt face. A slam fire (before the bolt goes into battery) can occur. To determine if a particular rifle has had the recall work performed, the bolt should be disassembled.

The Winchester model 100, mine is in .308 had a propensity to be a little off if the barrel was not properly broken in. Meaning some idiot gets home from the store with his new rifle and shoots two boxes of bullets through it in thirty minutes. Its the metal or the grooving in many rifles that you can ruin a new barrel by doing this.

I understand Winchester may still be honoring the recall. The rifle is a .308, Winchester Model 100, but this information may apply to other calibers in that model that may suffer the same issue. That issue is one of a bolt stuck or seized against the chamber with a spent case in the chamber, live round or even empty chamber.

The Winchester model 100 came in 243, 308 and 284. from 1961-1973. The 88 lever came in those calibers plus the 358. Both models are very similar looking and I could understand the pads on the 88 because they do pack a solid kick being lever actions. Having owned both models and all 4 cals.

Therefore, the only way to tell if the gun as been modified, if the "letter" is not present, is to take the barrel & action out of the stock, remove the trigger guard assembly and the try to rotate the firing pin by twisting it. If it does rotate, then the firing pin recall HAS NOT been performed. . Reply Quote Like.

Winchester continues to honor the recall and replace the old pins with the new style pin but either me or a smith has to remove the pin and send it in with the gun number so ...
