These birds have a curving crest, plume or topknot made of six feathers, that droops forward: black in males and brown in females; the flanks are brown with white streaks.

Along with the neighboring communities of Quail Valley and Menifee, it was incorporated as part of the City of Menifee on October 1, 2008.
The city is centrally located in Southern California in the Menifee Valley. It is almost 15 miles (24 km) north of Temecula and just north of Murrieta.
