In the early 1950s, it became apparent that there was a need for further education opportunities in Hong Kong. The HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine [a] (branded as HKUMed) is the medical school of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), a public research university. It was founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, one of the oldest western medical schools in the Asia–Pacific region, and which served as the base for HKU's founding in 1910.
The university lends its name to HKU station, the main public transport access to the campus (and the Lung Fu Shan and Shek Tong Tsui neighbourhoods), opened on 28 December 2014. The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is situated 4.5 km [ clarification needed ] southwest of the main campus, in the Southern District near Sandy Bay and Pok Fu Lam .
