Barlow lens: Optical element to increase the telescope's focal length and magnification, narrow the field of view and reduce coma distortion, providing opposite effects of a telecompressor. Astronomical filter: Used to select specific colors (or light frequencies) for astrophotography.
The Large Binocular Telescope at the Mount Graham International Observatory in Arizona uses two curved mirrors to gather light. An optical telescope gathers and focuses light mainly from the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, to create a magnified image for direct visual inspection, to make a photograph, or to collect data through electronic image sensors.
Diagram of Schmidt camera The 77 cm Schmidt-telescope from 1966 at Brorfelde Observatory was originally equipped with photographic film, and an engineer is here showing the film-box, which was then placed behind the locker at the center of the telescope (at the telescope's prime focus)
The first large telescope to use the design was the James Gregory Telescope of 1962 at the University of St Andrews. As of 2021, the James Gregory Telescope is also recognized as the largest Schmidt-Cassegrain. [4] The telescope is noted for its large field of view, up 60 times a full moon. [4]
The astronomical seeing conditions at an observatory can be conveniently described by the parameters r 0 and t 0. For telescopes with diameters smaller than r 0, the resolution of long-exposure images is determined primarily by diffraction and the size of the Airy pattern and thus is inversely proportional to the telescope diameter.
Telescopes can be classified by optical design or mechanical design/construction. Telescopes can also be classified by where they are placed, such as space telescopes . One major determining factor is type of light, or particle being observed including devices referred to as "telescopes" that do not form an image or use optics.
The Practical Astronomer: Comprising Illustrations of Light and Colours—practical Descriptions of All Kinds of Telescopes—the Use of the Equatiorial Transit, Circular, and Other Astronomical Instruments; a Particular Account of the Earl of Rosse's Large Telescopes and Other Topics Connected with Astronomy. Biddle. p. 352.
The 100-inch (2.54 m) Hooker reflecting telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory near Los Angeles, USA, used by Edwin Hubble to measure galaxy redshifts and discover the general expansion of the universe. A telescope is a device used to observe distant objects by their emission, absorption, or reflection of electromagnetic radiation. [1]
