In the 1950s, Ford introduced a three-tier approach to engines, with small, mid-sized, and larger engines aimed at different markets. All of Ford's mainstream V8 engines were replaced by the overhead cam Modular family in the 1990s and the company introduced a new large architecture, the Boss family, for 2010.
For the 2015 and 2016 model years, the only engine options were the 5.4L V8 or 6.8L V10 Modular engines. Starting in 2017, Ford began offering the 6.2L V8 Boss engine as a replacement for the 5.4L V8 engine. The chassis-cab configuration was eliminated starting with the 2019 model year. Ford did not produce the E-Series for the 2020 model year.

Using a detuned version of the engine used in the Ford GT, rated at 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, the twin-turbo EcoBoost is also shared with the Lincoln Navigator.
