It is located on the east side of the Connecticut River south of Gillette Castle State Park, and is separated from the mainland by Selden Creek, land owned by the Nature Conservancy. The roughly lozenge-shaped island is about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) at its widest point and about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long.

[3] Betz owned the farmhouse at the time of its nomination to the National Historic Register in 1987. [2] Applewood Farm operated as "Applewood Farms Inn", serving as a six-guest room bed and breakfast through the 1990s.
The islands are used for several different types of recreational activities, including camping, boating, kayaking, swimming, bird watching. Ownership of the islands varies, with about a half dozen held in private hands, some owned by the governments of Norwalk or Westport and some are part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. [1]
