Blau gas (German: Blaugas) is an artificial illuminating gas that is similar to propane. It was named after its inventor, Hermann Blau [1] [2] of Augsburg, Germany. Rarely used or produced today, it was manufactured by decomposing mineral oils in retorts by heat, and compressing the resulting naphtha until it liquefied.
Semi-water gas: Producer gas. Blue water-gas: Air, water or producer gas produced from clean fuels such as coke, charcoal and anthracite which contain insufficient hydrocarbon impurities for use as illuminating gas. Blue gas burns with a blue flame and does not produce light except when used with a Welsbach gas mantle.
Unenriched water gas may be described as Blue water gas (BWG). Mond gas, developed in the 1850s by Ludwig Mond, was producer gas made from coal instead of coke. It contained ammonia and coal tar and was processed to recover these valuable compounds. Blue water gas (BWG) burns with a non-luminous flame which makes it unsuitable for lighting ...

This gas is composed almost entirely of CO and H 2, and burns with a pale blue flame similar to natural gas. BWG has a calorific value of 11 MJ/m 3 (300 BTU/cu ft). Blue water gas lacked illuminants; it would not burn with a luminous flame in a simple fishtail gas jet as existed prior to the invention of the gas mantle in the 1890s. Various ...
