May 10 - Michigan's first indoor shopping mall, the Pontiac Mall (later renamed Summit Place), opened. The 60-acre development featured 42 stores that could be visited under a single roof with air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. The largest store was a two-level Montgomery Ward store.
Pontiac was founded in 1818-19 by a group of investors. [2] In 1819, Oakland County was established, with a county seat at Pontiac. By 1820, Pontiac had a dam, a sawmill, a flour mill, and a blacksmith shop. A courthouse was constructed in 1824, and by 1830 the city of Pontiac was clearly the center of commerce for the county.
Pontiac, located on the Clinton River, was Oakland's first town and became the county seat. After the Civil War, Oakland was still primarily a rural, agricultural county with numerous isolated villages. By the end of the 19th century, three rail lines served Pontiac, and the city attracted carriage and wagon factories.
