They are most known for having maxillary canines which extended down from the mouth when the mouth was closed. Machairodus (from Greek: μαχαίρα machaíra, 'knife' and Greek: ὀδούς odoús 'tooth') [2] is a genus of large machairodont or ''saber-toothed cat'' that lived in Africa, Eurasia and North America during the late Miocene. It is the animal from which the subfamily Machairodontinae gets its name.
Machairodontinae is an extinct subfamily of carnivoran mammals of the family Felidae (true cats). They were found in Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Europe, with the earliest species known from the Middle Miocene, with the last surviving species (belonging to the genera Smilodon and Homotherium) becoming extinct around Late Pleistocene-Holocene transition (~13-10,000 years ago).
