The combination sheriff's residence and jail was the most common type of detention facility built by Iowa counties from the 1840s to around 1950. New Hampton Township covers an area of 36.78 square miles (95.3 km 2) and contains one incorporated settlement, New Hampton (the county seat), and the hamlet of Boyd. [2] According to the USGS, it contains three cemeteries: Boyd, Saint Josephs and Union. The stream of Plum Creek runs through this township.
The town of Hampton was laid out by H. P. Allen, who was the county surveyor, in June 1856. The original plat was eight blocks by eight blocks in the shape of an "L". Near the center of the "L" was the two-block, or double, square. While many county seats in Iowa have a courthouse square, the double square is a rarity. [2]
