From 1821 to 1911 a census of the Irish population was taken every ten years; There are no surviving manuscripts for the years 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. The original records of the 1821 to 1851 censuses were destroyed by fire at the Four Courts in Dublin during the Irish Civil War, while those between 1861 and 1891 were possibly pulped during the First World War. [2] All that remained were the 1901 and 1911 census, with the latter put online in 2009 by the National Archives of Ireland. [2]
Prior to the secession of the Irish Free State, the whole of Ireland engaged in the census on the same night, however none of the census returns from Ireland for the 19th century still exist, except for partial returns. [5] In 2011 it became sponsor of the Society of Genealogists in their centenary year and agreed a reciprocal arrangement where each would give access to one another's online databases. [9]
