Novi Township is a civil township of Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. At the 2020 census , the township had a population of 160. [ 3 ] Of the original 36-square-mile (93 km 2 ) survey township , only a small portion of 0.11 square miles (0.28 km 2 ) remains unincorporated from the surrounding city of Novi .
In 1826, Joseph Yerkes, his sons William and John, and members of their family moved from Romulus, New York to Michigan and purchased land around Novi and Northville. One of those family members was Joseph D. Yerkes, the eldest son of William Yerkes. Joseph D. Yerkes was born in New York in 1819, and helped his father farm upon coming to Michigan.
The Jacob and Rebecca Fuerst Farmstead was a farm located at 24000 Taft Road in Novi, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. [1] The farm was demolished in 2008 [2] and the property redeveloped into Fuerst Park. [3]

In 2011, the Novi Community School District enrolled over 1,700 Japanese and Japanese-Americans. [36] Japanese School of Detroit, providing supplementary Japanese education, is located in Novi. It was founded in 1973 by the local Japanese companies. It moved to Novi from Birmingham in the northern hemisphere summer of 2011. [6]
Novi Woods Elementary School was built in 1976 to replace the old Novi Elementary School on Novi Road where the Novi Town Center Shopping area is today. This school is an open classroom type that was pioneered in Michigan in the early-1970s. David Ascher is the current principal of the school. The school currently has about 500 students attending.
