The cabin was built just south of Spread Creek by John Pierce Cunningham, who arrived in Jackson Hole in 1885 and subsisted as a trapper until he established the Bar Flying U Ranch in 1888. The Alpenhof Lodge in Teton Village in Teton County, Wyoming is an Alpine style hotel that was built in 1965. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. He returned the following year with his wife Hildegarde, and established a homestead claim in 1923 near the present Jenny Lake Lodge, where he built the cabin.
