Gampaha (Sinhala: ගම්පහ [ˈɡamːpaha]; Tamil: கம்பஹா ) is an urban city in Gampaha District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is situated to the north-east of the capital Colombo. It is the sixth largest urban area in Western Province, after Colombo, Negombo, Kalutara, Panadura and Avissawella. [2]

The main modes of transportation in Sri Lanka are bus, motorcycles and passenger cars (including taxi service).
The first motor omnibus in Sri Lanka was imported in 1907 and bus transport began in Sri Lanka as an owner-operated service. There was no regulation, so when more than one bus operated on a single route, there was a scramble for the load. By the mid-1930s, malpractices in pursuit of maximum profit began to compromise safety and comfort.
According by the statistics of 2011, 6.3% of the population of Gampaha district live in Negombo city limits and 11.6% of the population of the district live in Negombo Metropolis. [citation needed] It is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city. Most of Negombo's residents belong to the Sinhalese majority.
Gampaha District is located in the west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,387 square kilometres (536 sq mi). [1] It is bounded by Kurunegala and Puttalam districts from north, Kegalle District from east, Colombo District from south and by the Indian Ocean from west. [4]
