Directorate of Nursing Services was created in 1977 and was later changed to its current form. This was done to expand nursing training in Bangladesh and increase the number of nurses. [4] The directorate falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Bangladesh). [5] [6]
Currently, there are 39 public medical colleges, these provide 5380 seats every year for students undertaking MBBS. While the 68 private medical colleges provide 6040 seats. 6 colleges are run by Bangladesh Armed Forces which offer 375 seats. All the medical colleges award the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

College of Nursing was established in 1970 in Mohakhali, Dhaka. In 1978 the college became affiliated with the University of Dhaka. In the 1990s the college diploma program was suspended and it now provides BSc in Nursing and BSc in Public Health Nursing.
