In Islam, a khatib or khateeb (Arabic: خطيب khaṭīb) is a person who delivers the sermon (khuṭbah) (literally "narration"), during the Friday prayer and Eid prayers. [ 1 ] The khateeb is usually the prayer leader ( imam ), but the two roles can be played by different people.
Khatib was born in Hebron, Palestine, towards the end of the Ottoman Caliphate. He was from a prominent land-owning Hebron and East Jerusalemite family whose name "Khatib" stemmed from the deliverance of Islamic sermons by imams during Friday prayer and Eid prayers. The name "Khatib" originates from Arabic (Arabic: خاطب), referring to the person who delivers the sermon during Friday prayers and Eid Prayers. In most of the early- and mid-20th century Khatib was mostly used for pineapple, rubber and gambier plantations owned by Lim Nee Soon , from which Yishun residential town is named.

Al-Khatib was known for his brilliant preaching skills where he would be nicknamed the Preacher of Baghdad. [ 11 ] He taught hadith in the most prestigious places such as the Great Mosque of al-Mansur in Baghdad and Umayyad Mosque in Damascus indicating his high status and scholarship. [ 12 ]
Hisham Khatib was born in January 1936 in Acre at the house of his maternal grandfather, Sheikh Musa Al Tabari. His father Sheikh Mohammad Hashem Khatib was a judge. The family moved to Hebron for 1 year in 1941, then to Tulkarem in 1943 where they lived until 1945.
