Pai was the eldest son of T. M. A. Pai, Padma Shri awardee and founder of the Manipal group of institutions.He was born on 20 June 1933 into the family with ten siblings. [1] [2] [3] He completed his schooling in the southern Indian city of Udupi from the Udupi Board School, and followed it up with his intermediate level education from the MGM college in Udupi.
In 1961, he returned to Manipal to become the administrator of Kasturba Hospital, the teaching hospital of Kasturba Medical College.After the death of his father T. M. A. Pai in 1979, he became the head of the group and later took over as chancellor in due course Chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education [2] and the Chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group.
