An Ipswich Society blue plaque was installed on the Town Hall in 2016 commemorating Mary Whitmore, the first woman to be Mayor of Ipswich, in 1946. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The council built itself a new civic centre on Civic Drive in 1970 to serve as its main offices, but continued to use the town hall for full council meetings. [ 6 ]
The Ipswich Arts Festival, known as 'Ip-art' has been the town's annual summer arts festival since 2003 and seen a developing and varied programme of events from visual arts, performing arts, literature, film and music, notably a free music day in Christchurch Park. [56] The Ultrazang monthly live music night began in 2009. [57]
John Wark, one of the four inaugural members of the Ipswich Town F.C. Hall of Fame Richard Wright played over 350 games for Ipswich in three separate spells at the club. Matt Holland was captain of the club from 1997 to 2003. Fabian Wilnis was the Ipswich Town F.C. Player of the Year for the 2005–06 season.

Ipswich Town turned professional in 1936, and the first player to be capped by a national side received his call-up as recently as 1952. Ipswich Town were elected to The Football League on 30 May 1938 by a margin of just two votes, [1] at the expense of Gillingham, initially playing in the Third Division South. [13] The club's last competitive match before the league was suspended due to the Second World War was a 1–1 draw with local rivals, Norwich City. [13]
