The U.S. Department of Energy says that the annual cost to fuel a plug-in hybrid is $1,000 to $2,000, compared to $2,000 to $7,000 for traditional gas-powered vehicles.
Eligible vehicles must have MSRPs below $55,000 for passenger cars and $80,000 for light-duty trucks, a category that includes all but a small number of SUVs and crossovers.

Among the eligible vehicles are neighborhood electric vehicles, battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and fuel cell vehicles including cars, trucks, medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, and zero-emission motorcycles. Vehicles must be purchased or leased on or after March 15, 2010.
