The hospital, which was initially established as a tuberculosis sanitarium, was designed by Norman White [2] and constructed by Sisk Builders. [3] It was named in memory of the Irish republican leader, James Connolly, and officially opened as the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in 1955. [3]

James Connolly (Irish: Séamas Ó Conghaile; [1] 5 June 1868 – 12 May 1916) was a Scottish-born Irish republican, socialist, and trade union leader, executed for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland.
In Cowgate there is a likeness of Connolly and a gold-coloured plaque dedicated to him under the George IV bridge.
