The X-1800 was a watercooled 24-cylinder H-block of 2,240 in 3 displacement; [1] this was later expanded to 2,600 in 3 displacement. [2]It was intended to be used in the Vultee XP-54, Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender, Northrop XP-56, Lockheed XP-49, and Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning.
The 1800 was introduced in Australia in November 1965 [11] as the Austin 1800, with a Mark II version being introduced in 1968. Australian-produced vehicles started out with a claimed local content of 65–70%, along with an undertaking from the manufacturers to raise the level to 95% in line with government requirements by the end of 1968.
