Kateřina Siniaková regained the WTA number 1 doubles ranking at the end of the tournament. Routliffe and Elise Mertens were also in contention for the top ranking at the beginning of the tournament. Hsieh Su-wei was aiming to complete a career Grand Slam in women's doubles. She and Mertens lost in the first round to Mladenovic and Zhang.
Siniaková claimed the year-end individual WTA No. 1 doubles ranking after winning her first two round-robin matches. [7] Paolini, Townsend, and Caroline Dolehide made their debuts in the doubles competition at the WTA Finals. [8] Paolini was the only player in this edition to qualify for both the singles and doubles tournaments. [9]
The WTA rankings are based on a rolling 52-week, cumulative system. A player's ranking is determined by her results at a maximum of 18 tournaments (or 19 if she competed in the WTA Finals) for singles and 12 for doubles. Points are awarded based on how far a player advances in a tournament.
Alycia Parks and Taylor Townsend defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in the final, 6–7 (1–7), 6–4, [10–6] to win the women's doubles title at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the doubles tennis title at the 2023 WTA Finals. [1] Siegemund became the first German WTA Finals doubles champion. Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens were the reigning champions, [2] but Kudermetova did not qualify this year.
The ATP and WTA rankings are updated weekly on Mondays (UTC) or at the conclusion of a two-week tournament.. As of 1 March 2022, the ATP and WTA announced that Russian and Belarusian players continue to be allowed to compete in international tennis events on Tour and at the Grand Slams.
