Prior to 1977, bodybuilding had been considered strictly a male-oriented sport. Henry McGhee, described as the "primary architect of competitive female bodybuilding", was an employee of the Downtown Canton YMCA, carried a strong belief that women should share the opportunity to display their physiques and the results of their weight training the way men had done for years.

The film begins in the weeks leading up to the competition, observing the women as they train and discuss the contest with their coaches, families, and friends. In the lead-up to the competition, Bev Francis travels to the United States to be trained by 1972 AAU Mr. America , Steve Michalik (who later guest poses during a break in the competition).

She appeared in two episodes of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. with her sister, Cameo Kneuer. In 1991, Everson appeared on To Tell The Truth game show. Everson was the original host of the fitness show BodyShaping , [ 10 ] which she also produced.
The show's inception came as a result of the elimination of the Ms. Olympia, being the pinnacle of women's bodybuilding from 2015 to 2019, while the Ms. Olympia contest was on hiatus. Around this time, she began training other women from a gym in her basement. In February 2000, Moher opened her own combination gym and spa , Gayle Moher's Face and Bodyworks . Her greatest success as a professional to date was winning the 1999 Jan Tana Classic.
