Until the mid-19th century, the area that is now Grove City was a wilderness filled with oak, beech, maple, walnut, dogwood and other trees. The area's first European settler, Hugh Grant, operated a gristmill in Pittsburgh and transported excess goods down the Ohio River for sale, returning to Pittsburgh on foot.
Urbancrest was first settled in 1889, with the first church, later known as Union Baptist Church, being founded in 1892. The village was then incorporated in 1948. In 1971, Urbancrest elected Ellen Walker Craig-Jones as mayor, making her the first African-American female mayor elected in the United States of America. [6]

Parts of two municipalities are located in Pleasant Township: the city of Columbus, the county seat of Franklin County, in the northeast; and the village of Harrisburg, in the south. The unincorporated communities of Darbydale and Georgesville lie in the township's south and west, respectively.
