The Governor of Sabah (Malay: Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah) is the ceremonial head of state of Sabah, Malaysia. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri is styled Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT; "His Excellency"). The incumbent officeholder is Musa Aman , who took office on 1 January 2025.

The first Sultan, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II was the son of the last Sultan of Malacca, who reigned from 1528. In the 19th century, with support from the British, the Temenggong family gained recognition as rulers of the state. Its first sultan, Maharaja Abu Bakar is known as the founder of "modern Johor". His descendants rule the state today.

In the treaty, the Sultan appointed Overbeck as "Maharajah of Sabah and Rajah of Gaya and Sandakan." The treaty granted Overbeck the right over the whole region of Sabah, including the parts purporting to be the dominion of the Sulu Sultanate, as well as Sandakan and Tawau.
