Gaziantep, [a] historically Aintab and still informally called Antep, [b] is a major city in south-central Turkey. It is the capital of the Gaziantep Province , in the westernmost part of Turkey 's Southeastern Anatolia Region and partially in the Mediterranean Region .

[12] The ancient site of Karkemish is now an extensive set of ruins, located on the West bank of Euphrates River, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) south-east of Gaziantep, Turkey and 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of Aleppo, Syria.
Gaziantep Castle (Turkish: Gaziantep Kalesi) is a castle on top of a mound in the centre of Gaziantep, Turkey. First used as an observation point during the Hittite Empire, it was expanded into a castle during Roman rule. The castle was severely damaged by earthquakes in February 2023. [1] [2]
