The largest Alaska moose was shot in western Yukon in September 1897; it weighed 820 kg (1,808 lb), and was 2.33 m (7.6 ft) tall at the shoulder. [7] While the Alaska moose and the Asian Chukotka moose match the extinct Irish elk in size, they are smaller than Cervalces latifrons , the largest deer of all time.
Koyukuk Refuge's Three-Day Slough area, part of the 400,000-acre (1,600 km 2) Koyukuk Wilderness, has some of the most productive moose habitat in Alaska. This region has, at times, supported more than 10 moose per square mile. Recent counts indicate that some areas still contain densities of five moose or more per square mile.
The area is a significant waterfowl breeding ground, and after a proposal to flood the Yukon Flats via a dam on the Yukon River was turned down, the Yukon Flats were deemed worthy of protection. On 1 December 1978, US President Jimmy Carter designated the Yukon Flats as a National Monument based on the Antiquities Act of 1906.

An Alaska man and two police officers rescued a baby moose from what police described as “a sure demise” after it fell into a lake and got stuck in a narrow space between a floatplane and a dock.
The refuge was established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. [2] The northern part of the refuge, called Kaiyuh Flats, is adjacent to the Yukon River southwest of Galena. It contains 751,000 acres (3,040 km 2). The southern part contains approximately 3,099,000 acres (12,540 km 2) of land surrounding the Innoko River.
