The QWERTZ ( / ˈkwɜːrts / KWURTS) or QWERTZU ( / ˈkwɜːrtsuː / KWURT-soo) keyboard is a typewriter and keyboard layout widely used in Central and Southeast Europe. The name comes from the first six letters at the top left of the keyboard: ( Q W E R T Z ).
Both the Danish and Norwegian keyboards include dedicated keys for the letters Å /å, Æ /æ and Ø /ø, but the placement is a little different, as the Æ and Ø keys are swapped on the Norwegian layout. (The Finnish–Swedish keyboard is also largely similar to the Norwegian layout, but the Ø and Æ are replaced with Ö and Ä.
The German layout places "z" in a position where it can be struck by the index finger, rather than by the weaker little finger. Part of the keyboard is adapted to include umlauted vowels (ä, ö, ü) and the sharp s (ß). (Some newer types of German keyboards offer the fixed assignment Alt+++H → ẞ for its capitalized version.)
