Plate from the Harewood House botanical dessert service, probably 1830s-1840s. Coalport, Shropshire, England was a centre of porcelain and pottery production between about 1795 ("inaccurately" claimed as 1750 by the company) [1] and 1926, with the Coalport porcelain brand continuing to be used up to the present.

The museum presents the history of Coalport China, a manufacturer of fine English chinaware which was based on the site between 1795 and 1926. As well as original examples of historic china, there are also demonstrations of traditional ceramic techniques and original industrial buildings including kilns to fire the pottery.
Johnson Brothers was a British tableware manufacturer and exporter that was noted for its early introduction of "semi-porcelain" tableware. It was among the most successful Staffordshire potteries which produced tableware, much of it exported to the United States, from the 1890s through to the 1960s. [ 1 ]
The sale at auction in 2003 of a tureen in the form of a hen and chickens for £223,650 was then the auction record for English 18th-century porcelain. [54] In 2018 a pair of plaice -shaped tureens of c. 1755 from the collection of David Rockefeller and his wife fetched $300,000 (both sales at Christie's).
The easternmost part of Coalport was, at one time, served by two railway stations: Coalport East was a terminus of a London and North Western Railway branch from Wellington; it is sited on the northern river bank. Coalport West was a through station on the Severn Valley Railway on the southern bank, operated by the Great Western Railway.
English delftware pottery and its painted decoration is similar in many respects to that from Holland, but its peculiarly English quality has been commented upon: "... there is a relaxed tone and a sprightliness which is preserved throughout the history of English delftware; the overriding mood is provincial and naïve rather than urbane and sophisticated."
