Dana 44 (6-lug) or Dana 44 HD (8-lug) The 6-lug axle comes in both narrow and wide versions (Grand Wagoneer is narrow, J-truck is wide) The 8-lug is wide only. Rear Axle. Dana 44 (6-lug) offset just a tad. Note, some early 1986's have been spotted with an AMC 20 rear axle.

    Here's the deal... you can build one of these (assuming you meant 88 Grand Wagoneer; the Wagoneer for that year was the little baby Jeep XJ) into a passable off-road rig without a lot of coin... used parts, minimal build... basically used lift kit (4" recommended), 31's or 32's, and Lock Right in back and hit the trails (TreadLightly.org).

    Front is a Waggy that orginally had the 6x 5 1/2 pattern. For mine I used the Chevy spindle with the Ford hub and rotor to convert the front Waggy 44 to 5x5 1/2. I then got the adapter/spacer for the rear. I did find Chevy junkyard spindles to use, which helped with the cost.
