Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (/ ˈ æ d l eɪ /; February 5, 1900 – July 14, 1965) was an American politician and diplomat and who was the United States ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 until his death in 1965.
Seven names were placed in nomination: Adlai Stevenson, David B. Hill, Charles A. Towne, Abraham W. Patrick, Julian S. Carr, John W. Smith, and J. Hamilton Lewis. Former Representative Lewis thanked the convention for its generosity but did not wish to be considered for the vice presidency.
