The Milford, Franklin and Providence Railroad was chartered in 1882 to build from Bellingham Junction to Franklin Junction on the New York and New England Railroad (NY&NE) mainline. [1] It opened in August 1883, allowing through service from Milford to Boston via Franklin. [2] The P&W lease of the Milford and Woonsocket expired that year.

In 1847, the 11.97 mile (19.3 km) Milford Branch, splitting at Framingham, opened. A connection was later made at Milford to the Milford and Woonsocket Railroad and Hopkinton Railway. Most of the right-of-way (except for the short active section in Framingham) has been converted to part of the Upper Charles Rail Trail.
