The Indian Copper Corporation, a British company, set up the Indian Copper Complex at Ghatshila in 1930. It was nationalised in 1972 and merged with Hindustan Copper Limited. It has copper mines at Surda, Siddheswari Chapri, Kendadih, Patharbera and Rakha and processing plants such as conentrator and smelter at Moubhander, about a mile Ghatshila.
The first industrial copper mining started at Rakha Mines by a British firm in 1900.
