The California Hotel and Casino (also known as The Cal) is located in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The hotel casino is owned by Boyd Gaming. It opened on January 1, 1975, with 325 rooms in an 11-story hotel. A 14-story west tower was added in 1984, and was extended a decade later, bringing the room count to 781.
Although the Boyd family had been involved in the Las Vegas casino industry for decades, Boyd Gaming Corporation wasn't founded until January 1, 1975, when the company was formed to develop and operate the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. It is owned by Boyd Gaming. It originally opened in 1978 as the Holiday International, part of the Holiday Inn franchise. The casino portion closed in 1980, due to financial problems, and the hotel closed four years later. The property was renovated by Japanese investor Katsuki Manabe as the Park Hotel and Casino, which operated from 1987 to 1990.
The fourth Sam's Town was a riverboat casino that operated in Kansas City, Missouri, from September 1995 until July 1998. [8] It was branded as Sam's Town Gambling Hall, Kansas City. The fifth Sam's Town opened in May 2004 after Boyd Gaming acquired an existing property in Shreveport, Louisiana, from Harrah's Entertainment.
