At some point, there must be a moment that happens "now" - a point in time before the future has shifted to the past. I mean it happens constantly. An atomic clock measures billions of frequencies each second but even then, each one of those cycles moves from "about to happen" to "has happened" - even at that extraordinary rate.
It's interesting, because it's contextual. Although I think it's a fairly short time. If I'm on the phone and I say can you hold for just a moment, I could mean as little as a few seconds or as much as a minute. Usually I would expect it to fall somewhere in there, but I could see it being a bit more.
I can see that taken literally "long moment" is incorrect. But it isn't meant to be taken literally: it's figurative language. And if the figurative language fits in with the tone and voice of the prose, then it should work well. "I had a wonderful day." The day is not in itself wonderful. The speaker had a wonderful day.

Even Lomo’s ‘simple use’ cameras are €30 including a film.
It’s as big as a room. It is a room, with four chambers. A child could walk around it, head high, bending only to step through the valves. The valves are as big as the swinging doors in a saloon. This house of a heart drives a creature a hundred feet long. When this creature is born it is twenty feet long and weighs four tons.
Like everyone already said, it’s typically one minute for a moment of silence. I just want to add that a moment used to be a standard measurement of time back when we used sundials, 1/40th of a solar hour averaging to about 90 seconds. Moment of silence should be 1 minute long. It's a minute and people only seem to remember the Jews that were ...
But "hang on a moment" as an idiom isn't really using that sense of the word - it's just a generic non-specific length of time. Probably the length of time until they explain things further to justify a longer wait, or until they come back from dealing with a short task (something that would take longer to explain than to just do).
