A quire of paper is a measure of paper quantity. The usual meaning is 25 sheets of the same size and quality: 1 ⁄ 20 of a ream of 500 sheets. Quires of 25 sheets are often used for machine-made paper, while quires of 24 sheets are often used for handmade or specialised paper of 480-sheet reams.
One can derive the grammage of other sizes by arithmetic division. A standard A4 sheet made from 80 g/m 2 paper weighs 5 grams (0.18 oz), as it is 1 ⁄ 16 (four halvings, ignoring rounding) of an A0 page. Thus the weight, and the associated postage rate, can be approximated easily by counting the number of sheets used.
In the metric system, the mass per unit area of all types of paper and paperboard is expressed in terms of grams per square metre (g/m 2).This quantity is commonly called grammage in both English and French, [2] though printers in most English-speaking countries still refer to the "weight" of paper.
Weighing scale to determine paper weight. Paper density is a paper product's mass per unit volume. The density can be calculated by dividing the grammage of paper (in grams per square metre or "gsm") by its caliper (usually in micrometres, occasionally in mils).
The weight of an A-series sheet of a given paper weight can be calculated by knowing the ratio of its size to the A0 sheet. For example, an A4 sheet is 1 ⁄ 16 the size of an A0 sheet, so if it is made from 80 g/m 2 paper, it weighs 1 ⁄ 16 of 80 g (2.8 oz), which is 5 g (0.18 oz).
For the imposition of an A4-sized hardcover book on A3 paper, for example, one could first write a shell script to re-arrange the document in the following sequence: 1, 32, 31, 2, 3, 30, 29, 4... 33, 64, 63, 34, 35, 62, 61, 36... Then, using Page Setup or Print (under the File menu) one could print two pages per sheet, double-sided. The result ...

Most nations describe paper in terms of grammage—the weight in grams of one sheet of the paper measuring one square meter.. Other people, especially in the United States, describe paper in terms of pound weight—the weight in pounds per ream (500 sheets) of the paper with a given area (based on historical production sizes before trimming): for card stock, this is 20 by 26 in (508 by 660 mm ...
