The Australian standard pallet is designed for use with the RACE container of Australian railways. Originally the pallet was specified at 46 × 46 inches (from a nominal size of 48 × 48 inches, or 4 ft × 4 ft), [3] but this has been metricated to the marginally smaller 1165 × 1165 mm dimensions.
EUR-pallet specification A stack of counterfeit EUR-pallets. The EUR-pallet's dimensions are defined in the following standards: UIC 435-2 Standard of quality for EUR flat pallets made of wood measuring 800 mm x 1200 mm (EUR-1) ISO 445 Pallets for materials handling - Vocabulary (ISO 445:2008) ISO 3676 Packaging—Unit Load Sizes—Dimensions
They are ill-suited for the standard 20-foot (6.1 m) and 40-foot (12 m) ISO shipping containers used around the globe. Australian standard pallets are usually manufactured in hardwood, but 1165 × 1165 mm pallets can also be manufactured using lighter timber suitable for use as disposable pallets using 16 millimeter boards.
The most common sizes (length × width) are 600 by 400 millimetres (24 in × 16 in) and 400 mm × 300 mm (16 in × 12 in), which can be stacked together to fill a Euro-pallet measuring 1,200 mm × 800 mm (47 in × 31 in).
The 20 foot pallet is 238 inches (6,045 mm) long and 96 inches (2,438 mm) wide. What the actual dimensions of contoured upper deck ULDs are is very hard to know, because most manufacturers only profile width, length and height data.
The RACE general container was designed to accommodate 20 standard 1,168 mm × 1,168 mm (46 in × 46 in) pallets stacked in two levels. Carrying capacity was 17 tonnes (16.7 long tons; 18.7 short tons) and it had rear and side doors for ease of loading and unloading. [2]
