Milton was laid out and platted in 1824. [4] The community was named for the presence of several watermills in the area. [5] The Milton post office has been in operation since 1825. [6] The Milton post office is currently open after repairs were made to the premises after an arson fire. By 1826, Milton had a population of nearly 200. [7]
Pinkney James started a gristmill and sawmill at Milton in 1824. [2] James laid out the community in 1825. [3] A post office was established at Milton in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1850. [4]
An 1824 traveler encountered a single bison near the modern location of the preserve and shot it. Bison were extirpated from Indiana by 1830. [4] Twenty-three American bison were introduced to the Kankakee Sands in October of 2016. The bison are from the Wind Cave National Park. [5] Bison were indigenous to Indiana until exterminated by 1790. [6]
