The Blinded Bird" is a 1916 poem written by English author and poet Thomas Hardy. The poem was reportedly written as a protest against Vinkensport, a sort of singing competition between male finches. [1] The poem decries the prior historical practice of blinding birds to improve their performance at the sport.
The poem itself is divided into three stanzas. The first stanza revolved around the "caged bird" longing for freedom as spring and freedom exist around it. In stanza two, the bird is described as fighting to be free and escape the cage. Finally, the third stanza is about, as Burns notes, "the nature of the bird's song", as a "prayer for freedom."
The poem has influenced works of fiction including Ken Chowder's 1980 novel Blackbird Days [14] and a 2015 novella by Colum McCann titled "Thirteen Ways of Looking". [15] Welsh poet R.S.Thomas wrote a parody of the poem, reversing the perspective as "Thirteen Blackbirds Look at a Man".
