You're almost right: standard COBOL only has names for data fields and no such thing as pointers. RENAME gives you a way to treat a range of variables as straight character data. REDEFINES is a cleaner way to do unions (but still generally not a good idea). Condition names look more like a syntactic construct than a data type.
