The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, non-profit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people in the Houston, Texas, United States metropolitan area to live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 9,000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of Greater Houston.
The state transferred control of the school to the Texas Education Agency in 1953, from which point the School for the Blind became a self-contained school district. In the late 1960s the school was integrated with the all-black Texas Blind and Deaf School. In 1989 the program was renamed the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. [4]

Henry Louis Hilgartner was considered the "founding father" of the Travis County Association for the Blind. he received his M.D. degree at the University of Maryland in 1889. He did advanced study in Baltimore, New York, and Vienna before he moved to Austin, Texas, in July 1891. In 1893 he was appointed oculist for the Texas School for the Blind.
