Heist-aan-Zee, Heist or Heyst, is a town (formerly a municipality, until 1971) in Knokke-Heist, West Flanders, Belgium. Georges Lemmen, Beach at Heist, 1892. It was a prominent summer beach resort in the 1890s. It had a beachfront lined with hotels and a "dike" paved walkway on a storm fender.
The total area is 56.44 km 2 which gives a population density of 603 inhabitants per km 2. Knokke-Heist is located along the North Sea in a polder area on the Belgian border with the Netherlands . It is Belgium's best-known and most affluent seaside resort .
With an area of 6.02 km 2 (2.32 sq mi), it is also a relatively small municipality in the region, ranking eleventh out of nineteen. It is bordered by the Brussels municipalities of Anderlecht, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Jette and Koekelberg , as well as the Flemish municipality of Dilbeek .
