Barbara Harbach (born February 14, 1946) [1] is an American composer, harpsichordist, organist, and teacher. [2] Since 2004, she taught music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She founded Women in the Arts-St. Louis to highlight women's work and gain more performances for musicians and composers. [3]
Marshall began her organ studies with John Mueller in 1974, earning her high school diploma from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 1977. A Morehead Scholar, she completed a BA in French while simultaneously taking music classes at Duke University with R. Larry Todd and with Fenner Douglass.
She is the former organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City (1990–2003), the first female organist to hold that post. She was also organist for the Paul Winter Consort at the cathedral's Easter and Christmas services and performed with the ensemble on their Grammy Award -winning album Silver Solstice , released in 2005.
She worked as the music director of University United Methodist Church in St. Louis, and taught organ at the Saint Louis Conservatory and at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; [1] she has also worked as organist and music director at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. [2] [3] She is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists. [1]
