Gilas is a Filipino word that loosely translates into English as "prowess", and sinag translates as "ray" (sunlight). The name Gilas was adopted from the mascot of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila, Philippines which is an eagle. The mascot was designed by Filipino sports journalist Danny Simon.

The tournament will be co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
