Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), [1] BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Awake, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. He composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731.
It is structured in three movements, corresponding to the three stanzas of the hymn. The first movement is an extended chorale fantasia, the second develops motifs from the first movement, the third includes a quotation of his fathers's closing choral chorale from his cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140. Norwegian-American composer F. Melius Christiansen composed a famous a capella choral arrangement of the hymn in 1925, titled "Wake, Awake" in English. Hugo Distler composed an organ partita based on the hymn in 1935 (Op. 8/2). The following example is the final movement of Bach's cantata, a four-part setting of the final stanza:
