Petoskey (/ p ə ˈ t ɒ s k i / pə-TOSS-kee) is the largest city and the county seat of Emmet County, Michigan, and is the largest settlement within the county. [5] Petoskey has a population of 5,877 at the 2020 census , up from 5,670 at the 2010 census.

In Emmet County the district includes, in addition to Petoskey: Bay View, Conway, and a portion of Oden. Townships include Bear Creek Township, Resort Township, Springvale Township, and sections of Little Traverse Township and Littlefield Township. [6] A portion of the district is in Charlevoix County, where it includes Walloon Lake.
It connects the communities of Petoskey, Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Alanson, Pellston, Levering, and Mackinaw City. To the south, US-31 parallels the Lake Michigan coast. US 131 has its northern terminus at US-31 in Petoskey. South of Emmet County, US-131 also serves as another north–south thoroughfare, taking a more inland route than US-31.
