Joanna Cole (August 11, 1944 – July 12, 2020) [1] was an American author of children's books, [2] best known as the author of the Magic School Bus series, which sold more than 93 million copies in 13 countries. [3]
Joanna Coles was born in Otley, West Yorkshire, England, in 1962. Her mother was a medical social worker and her father was a teacher. Much of her family still resides in Yorkshire. In 1972 at the age of 10, Coles had her first article published in the children's section of the Yorkshire Post. [4]

The first medium in which this franchise was developed was the Magic School Bus book series. Craig Walker, vice-president and senior editorial director at Scholastic Co., stated that the concept began with the idea of combining science with fictional stories, and Joanna Cole (who had written both science and humor before) and Bruce Degen were then approached with creating such a series.
The book was adapted into the first episode of the Magic School Bus television series to be broadcast. It is likely not the first episode produced (i.e. the pilot episode) since Arnold at one point mentions that the class went on a field trip inside a rotten log, probably referring to the events of the episode The Magic School Bus Meets The Rot Squad.
Bruce Degen (/ ˈ d iː ɡ ə n / DEEG-ən; [1] June 14, 1945 – November 7, 2024) was an American illustrator and writer, known for illustrating The Magic School Bus, a picture book series written by Joanna Cole. He collaborated with writers Nancy White Carlstrom, on the Jesse Bear books, and Jane Yolen, on the Commander Toad series.
